Supplied new by Minories Mazda in Sunderland, Mr W. took collection of his new car on 12/5/97. During the first 3 years of its life, the car was used much as you’d expect for an MX5, averaging about 3500 miles a year. The service book shows that it was serviced twice during that time at Minories. In December 2000, ownership passed to Mr T. also of Sunderland who also had it serviced in 2002 at Minories. Initially used at a similar rate of mileage, this soon backed off dramatically to the point where the car was covering less than 100 miles each year. The car then passed to Mr T’s nephew, Mr T. in 2017 which brought the car south to be part of a wider collection and was really only used to be MOT’d each year. Sadly, Mr T. passed away last year, and his wife made the very difficult decision to sell the car this spring - we feel privileged that she agreed to sell it to us. We are in possession of all the original books in the original holder, as well as numerous invoices for work carried out, all the historical MOT certificates from 2000 and tax discs from 2005. We would urge you to view the MOT history online, it is quite something to behold having never even had an advisory note. Since taking custodianship of the car, we have carried out a full service including cambelt, tensioners and water pump and also replaced the brake fluid to ensure the car is well prepared for use this year. The car has a fresh MOT with no advisories so is ready to go.
The car starts on the key and settles quickly to a nice, even idle. These are extremely durable engines, but it is lovely to experience one with so little mileage – it is so quiet and performs as it would have done in 1997. The steering and suspension both feel great and it doesn’t take long to realise why these cars were such a resounding success. It is difficult to imagine a more original driving experience of an MX5 than this, and it’s all the better for not having been modified or fettled.
The paintwork is in fantastic condition, with the silver coachwork holding a strong shine. It is overwhelmingly original with only some high quality localised touch ups that have been sympathetically done whilst with us (details on request). All the panel gaps and factory welds are intact supporting the fact that this is an accident free car. There are some very minor blemishes in the paintwork but not to the extent that they draw the eye. The hood is free from blemishes or damage, with the rear plastic window in very good condition – the factory tonneau cover is supplied. The tyres are matching Toyo Proxes, all with 6mm or more of remaining tread and the wheels are in excellent condition only showing some minor marks. The car has never been welded and nor does it require it. It would be disingenuous to call this car concours, but it is an overwhelmingly original and stunning example all round and we believe could be taken to concours level should the new owner wish to go that route.
As expected, the condition of the interior follows the same theme as the exterior. Everything works and all warning lights go out as they should. The leather seats show virtually no wear and all the plastics are in fine fettle. There are some delamination marks on the wood cappings but this is generally a fantastic example inside and a very enjoyable environment to be in.
This is a very rare opportunity to obtain one of the best examples available of a car that is firming up in price across the board. Sub 20k mile, UK supplied cars are exceptionally unusual, even more so a desirable limited edition.
