Overview
A superbly maintained, two owner E39 M5, often given the lofty title of ‘peak BMW’ by journalists and marque experts. Fitted with the legendary S62 5.0 V8 engine, mated to a manual 6 speed gearbox, this example comes with the following equipment from the factory:

Supplied new by Barons, Farnborough in December 2001, the car was first serviced by the supplying dealer and Barons Hindhead until a change to Snows in 2013 through to 2019, with a recent service at BMW Group 1 in Brighton – this is supported by the original service book which has 12 stamps, exclusively from BMW main dealers. There is also a large pack of invoices, some supporting the stamped book, others for works carried out by independent specialists. This includes new timing chains, refurbished VANOS units, new MAFs, spark plugs, various suspension works and very importantly restorative work to the sills by a proper BMW/Porsche body specialist, costing over £2600 (and they weren’t bad at all!). In the last 3000 miles, over £11,000 has been spent on the car surely making it one of the best maintained examples available. We are in possession of the full book pack along with several old MOT certificates.
Mechanical Condition
The car starts fine and settles to a lovely steady but menacing idle. Moving off, the clutch is smooth but not overly light, letting you know that there is a serious lump up front to be explored when it’s warmed up. What is remarkable about the E39 M5 is it’s tractability – you can pootle around easily at 30mph in 5th gear, but when you decide to open it up it seems to have endless shove right up to the redline. The car shifts gears well and handles very nicely indeed having been 4 wheel aligned in the last 12 months. It may not be super quick by modern standards but it is an absolute joy to drive on any occasion and that is not something you can genuinely say about many cars.
Exterior Condition
The paintwork is in great condition and when in direct sunlight it reflects superbly. All panel gaps are even with the original seam sealer in place, indicating an accident-free car. As previously mentioned, the sills have been repaired and fully painted within the last 12 months by Impact Bodywork – they have faithfully replicated the factory finish by use of the correct PU sealer, rather than stonechip – we have photos of all the work carried out. The wheels are all in unmarked condition, and whilst they are not finished in exactly the correct Shadowchrome coating, they are not offensively different so could be refurbed when tyres need replacing should the new owner chose to do so. The tyres are all Continental Sport Contact in excellent condition. Closer inspection will reveal some minor blemishes around the car, but generally this is a really smart and importantly, solid example.
Interior Condition
The interior of the car is equally good condition only showing minor marks on the leather. The heritage seats are much more desirable than the standard seats and have stood up well over time. The wood trim suits the heritage leather nicely and only has a few marks. All the electrics work without exception and there are no warning lights on the dash.
Summary
It is exceptionally rare for a 2 owner car with an exclusively BMW main dealer stamped book to come to market, let alone one with heritage leather and so much expenditure in the right places.
E39 M5s do vary considerably in price but the best maintained ones are starting to pull away from the ‘cheap’ cars, as to get those to standard properly means you would be considerably out of pocket compared to buying the right car in the first place.
